How to get Healthy Hair and Keep it!

The never-ending quest! Here are some tips that I’ve put together from various hair professionals for healthy luxurious locks.

  1. Regular trims. My stylist says about every 6-8 weeks will keep your locks split-end free and healthy.
  2. The right kind of brush. On wet hair, which is more fragile and likely to stretch and break, a wide toothed comb is best. On dry hair it is recommended to spend the cash and get a great natural bristle brush. The top of the line is of course Mason Pearson ($60-$130) which has donned many magazine pages and celebrity stylists hands. But a good less expensive brand is Denman ($18-$28). Both are great brushes that will really make your tresses shine with minimal breakage.
  3. Try not to put heat on your hair everyday. If you are one of those ladies that gets out of the shower, blow dries your hair, and then straightens it or curls it...let’s try to give your hair a bit of a break. Wash it and then let it air dry a bit and then get creative! Put it in a high bun or pony tail with a cute headband. Or you can try this fun trick where you shower at night, run some gel into it after it dries a bit, and then braid it into four even braids and go to bed. In the morning you will have fabulous wavy hair when you take the braids out. One of my go-to styles when I do not have time to style my hair is the flip through pony tail where you do a low pony then make a hole above the pony tail holder and flip the pony through the hole with a twist or the boho braid. Now the next day you can take your air dried hair and apply some heat!
  4. Take hair vitamins. There are so many out there, and they are not only good for your hair, they are great for your whole body. I like got mine at the health food store. I prefer gel caps so I chose one for that reason.
  5. Use a deep treatment once a week. Try a hydrating mask, oils, or deep conditioner. It is best to leave in the hair with a shower cap on for about 10-20 minutes. The heat from your scalp will let the product penetrate the hair. Probably the best one out there is Kerastase. It’s pricey but awesome.
  6. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week. Try to find a gentle one like Aveda Rosemary Mint which is just divine! This will remove build up dulling your hair and restore it back to shiny brilliance! Be sure to use a good conditioner after since it will take away natural oils in your hair.
  7. Use a heat protecting product. When you use heat while styling, always use a heat protective product. I mean, those irons are dang hot! If it is too hot for your skin, then it is too hot for your hair! It's doing damage to your hair, frizzing, frazzling, and splitting it. There are tons on the market. CHI makes them of course, they are very good. I also like Nexxus, Wella, Matrix, and Aveda.
