Three-Step Regimen: Do You Really Need It?

A good number of women swear by the effects of a three-step regimen. But how many times are we bombarded with reminders from skin care lines that we ought to cleanse, tone and moisturize? Here's a breakdown of each step and why it is important.

Cleanse

A good cleanser will do two things: strip your face of dirt and oil while retaining its natural moisture. These come in the forms of facial scrubs, facial washes, and cleansers. For those of you who wear makeup often, a good makeup remover is one sub-step in this process. A routine would also necessitate exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and reveal a dewy, younger skin.

Different skin types call for different types of cleansers. Go for one that is specifically made for your skin. Otherwise, you risk overdrying your face or having acne problems.

Tone

For some women, using a toner removes the dirt, oil and makeup that cleansers fail to wash off. In addition, helps their skin look taut. However, dermatologists advise against the use of toners. For the professionals, taut skin is an indication of dryness, and a good cleanser is a better investment that will wash away last night (even last week's) residue.

According to dermatologists, toners are simply a constructed necessity among beauty providers, and that any woman could do without them. But hey, if your skin prefers that you use toner, then don't ditch that bottle. Otherwise, you'd be better off without it.

Moisturize

Moisturizers vary in function. Some work to give an extra boost of shine and moisture to dry skin while others keep oil at bay. Whatever your skin type is, the moisturizer you should should always be accompanied with SPF protection (it's better if you could find a moisturizer that's infused with SPF instead of piling on moisturizers and sunscreen).

Consider your skin type when planning a routine. The two important processes are cleansing and toning, so make sure to go with products that compliment- not go against- the composition of your skin. Skin care lines such as VMV HypoallergenicsOlay, and St. Ives have products specifically made for different types of skin, so you might want to try them.
